George W. Vargo, 83, of Masontown, PA. passed away Wednesday, August 19 at WVU Hospital Uniontown, PA with his family by his side.

He was born in Clarksville, PA on May 5,1943, the son of the late Albert and Harriette (Wolfe) Vargo.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served during the Viet Nam War; earning the Rifle Expert Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. After leaving the Army he was employed as a Coal Miner at Gateway Coal Company Clarksville, PA.

He was predeceased by his wife Micheline (Rates) Vargo and sisters: Sandra Murray and Kathryn Jones and brothers: Albert “Earl” Vargo and Ronald Vargo. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters: Melissa Polosky and husband John of Bethel Park, PA. and Lynn Westfall and husband Brad of Canonsburg, PA; sister Linda Seese and brother Thomas Vargo and wife Sandy and four grandchildren: Andrew and Jeremy Polosky, Noah and Blake Westfall and several nieces and nephews.

George was a member of American Legion Post #400, Carmichaels, PA , life member of VFW Post #3491, Carmichaels, PA., VVI (Vietnam Veterans Inc) , USS Soccer Federation, West Allegheny Chapter of PIAA, Summitt Chapter.

Family and friends will be received at the JOHN S. MAYKUTH JR. FUNERAL HOME, 7 River Avenue, Masontown, PA, Monday, August 24 from 2-8 p.m. A Military Service will be accorded at 6 p.m. by Carmichaels VFW Post 3491, American Legion Post 400, Masontown VFW Post 4584, Masontown American Legion Post 423 and Hopwood Amvets. Tuesday, August 25 from 9 until 10 a.m. the hour of Service in the Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Andrew Gump officiating. Interment follows at 12:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.
